Jenifer, When you spoke about these pieces and the emotional place you were in your life at the time you painted them it really resonated with me. You accepted the uncertainty of what they meant, exaclty, even though they were your creation. You shared with such blunt honesty about your creative clarity being the only reassuring and comfortalble space that was familiar to you at the time you created them. I think these paintings capture a self portrait, the emotional self. I think you were searching for a way out, for you and your dear friend. I think the black “blobs”, as you called them, are your portals. To me, the beauty of Hawii is captured in the cheerful colors and the black is the exit, for you, from your pain and your friend’s exit from this life. All of your work was moving in this show for different reasons. But these, to me, were just so powerful. Thank you.

Nicholas, I really appreciate your kind and perceptive reflection on these works, esp as it’s been some weeks since the show came down! I am tremendously touched by your insightful, sensitive observations. What a gift. Thank YOU!
