ART EDUCATION I: IDEAS AND HISTORY
CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
spring 2008
Students investigated the theory, philosophy and the history that has made art education the multi-defined, sometimes controversial, subject matter it is today. Issues of power, identity, diversity and social justice relevant to education will be examined, critiqued, analyzed and discussed. The building of one’s own personal philosophy of art education was a primary objective of the class. Towards this end, students read, wrote, reflected, discussed, observed, conducted research, developed and made class presentations. They developed knowledgeable, supported points of view about the course’s central questions and investigate Bay Area art education sites. Classes included films, lectures, roundtable discussions, group exercises and guest speakers.
